Four Brooklyn schools are among 11 in New York City cited as needing improvement under the No Child Left Behind Act, according to the state Education Department.
Those schools include Bushwick Community High School, Secondary School for Law, Secondary School for Research and W.E.B. DuBois Academic High School. The schools risk eventually being closed unless students make the grade.
"We're very proud of our school," says Bushwick Community H.S. Principal Tira Randal. "We're not angry or bitter that the process is happening. As a matter of fact, we welcome the opportunity to take a look at our school and how we may be able to improve."
In December, the department released the statewide list of elementary and middle schools that need improvement based on 2006-2007 third- and eighth-grade English language arts and math assessments. More than 300 schools are currently deemed as failing, including 81 high schools.
The state also removed five Brooklyn high schools, including East New York Family Academy, from its needs improvement list Tuesday.
