Commuters couldn't believe their eyes today when they saw that the entrance to the 4th Avenue and 9th Street subway station has reopened after 40 years.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) says 4th Avenue has seen enormous residential growth in the last 10 years, increasing the demand for mass transit in the neighborhood.
Before the entrance reopened, complete with new lights and floors, commuters would have to cross six lanes of traffic over 4th Avenue to get to the other side of the street.
The reopening of the entrance is part of the Culver Viaduct rehabilitation project, which also includes the restoration of the archway over 4th Avenue.
The MTA says the entire project comes with a price tag of more than $500 million, and it is expected to be completed next year.
