AAA predicts 41 million people will travel for the Fourth of July holiday this weekend, with 85 percent of them going by car.
With the holiday landing on a Saturday this year, the roads are expected to be congested for the Friday commute and some drivers are opting to stay close to home.
Local gas stations say they have seen up to a 50 percent increase in sales compared to other regular weekends.
AAA is urging motorists to drive carefully and put down smartphones and other gadgets that can distract from the road.
