Mayor Eric Adams’ administration says it is considering housing migrants in a notorious federal jail that was closed after Jeffrey Epstein’s suicide.
The request, suggested in a letter to Gov. Kathy Hochul, comes as the city struggles to handle the thousands of migrants who have arrived. The total number has reached 100,000 this month according to Adams.
The city’s letter also identifies several sites in which migrants could potentially be housed, including the defunct Metropolitan Correctional Center Jail which was deemed unsafe for humans by a Department of Justice.
Adams recently announced a new relief center will be added to Randall’s Island in the coming weeks.
