Brooklyn residents are coming together for a tradition that has been going strong for more than a century.
The annual Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Giglio Feast opened Thursday night in Williamsburg to celebrate southern Italian history and culture.
The feast is a tradition that was transplanted to Brooklyn by the Nolani immigrants as they attempted to maintain traditions from the Mezzogiorno while adjusting to the new culture in America.
Visitors can enjoy various Italian foods including zeppoles, sausage and calzones. Guests can also participate in games, go on rides and enjoy live entertainment.
The feast continues for 12 days.
Event organizers say the most exciting day is Sunday, when a team of people will lift the Giglio statue and dance it through the streets.
