A city audit has revealed that eligible Brooklyn residents awaiting public housing may not get it due to repairs that have been neglected.

The New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) has 135,000 families awaiting housing as of February 2006. The city comptroller says many of them could be in apartments if NYCHA would repair units in a timely manner. One Brooklyn woman says her building has more than 800 apartments that have been vacant since October 2005. Tenants fear empty apartments will attract squatters.

Many Brooklyn residents have expressed that the wait time for public housing is lengthy and the process is daunting.
