A 6-month-old baby is dead after a fire ripped through a Kensington home in a Hasidic Jewish community Thursday.
A police chief at the scene said the fire started on the second floor of the E. 3rd Street home where 6-month-old Tovia Goldman died. The baby's family managed to escape, but was unable to reach the child due to thick smoke and intense flames.
Neighbors praised the firefighters' quick response to the scene. They also expressed regret that the fatal fire came as the family celebrates the Jewish holiday of Sukkot.The Red Cross is assisting the family.
