Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance was filled with cultural nods to Puerto Rico, featuring surprise appearances by Ricky Martin and Lady Gaga.
But for many in Williamsburg, the standout moment was a cameo by Maria Antonia Cay, known as Toñita, the owner of the Caribbean Social Club on Grant Street.
“In Williamsburg, the Latinos, Boricuas they were screaming when Toñita came out,” said Jackie, who was born in Puerto Rico and lives in Williamsburg. “They showed our little piece of Grand Street. It was amazing, we were really proud.”
Williamsburg’s Los Sures neighborhood was once home to a vibrant Puerto Rican and Dominican community. Over the years, gentrification has changed the area drastically, but Toñita’s Caribbean Social Club, which opened in the 1970s, has remained a staple.
Residents describe Toñita as a local icon.
“She’s the last stronghold for Puerto Ricans in this neighborhood,” said Ronald Rivera, a longtime neighbor. “Given the history of this neighborhood as well, I think she's really important."
Bad Bunny has honored Toñita multiple times, visiting the club on several occasions.
“I had the pleasure of meeting him at Toñita’s when he released 'Debí Tirar Más Fotos,'” one local said. “I got to give him a hug and a kiss.”
By bringing Toñita onto the world’s biggest stage, Bad Bunny highlighted her place in history and in people’s hearts.
