A Northwell Health child psychiatrist says anxiety is up among children as school scares are happening across Long Island and the country.
A threat was made on social media toward West Babylon Senior High School on Thursday, causing that school to go into remote learning.
Some parents in West Islip got word of the threat and picked up their students early.
"It's crazy how something like this can make so many people just go from zero to 100," one student says.
Dr. Victor Fornari, a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Northwell Health says that these incidents can be unnerving for those involved.
"Being anxious right now is normal," Fornari says. "More than 50% of our general population, including our youth, are currently experiencing significant symptoms of anxiety."
He says schools have to cooperate with law enforcement and the neighborhood in ways they've never done before.
Experts say it's important to acknowledge that bad things happen, but also to reassure children that many people are working to keep them safe, including their parents, teachers and police.
