A local nonprofit in Bensonhurst is now struggling to keep food on the table after 30 years of service.
"We have been cutting off hundreds of people there might be thousands of people," said Thomas Neve, founder of Reaching Out Community Services.
Reaching Out Community Services is a nonprofit that provides food and services to more than 10,000 people in south Brooklyn.
He told News 12 without more money, he might have to close for good.
"We've turned away hundreds of people probably more than that we don't know we don't even want to count because it's really against our mission," said Neve.
For the people in the system, they walk in and use computers to select groceries. The staff then shop around for everything on the lists. It's a one-stop shop system they've been using for decades, but Thomas said it is becoming harder to stay open because the cost of everything continues to increase so the need for this food is even greater.
"Unfortunately, we're in a position now where we have to make a decision up so we're navigating all these changes around us is forcing us to do that like the lack of support the lack of interest," said Neve.
With the way things have been going, he may be forced to close in the next six months. He's reached out to elected officials, like Council Member Alexa Aviles for financial assistance. She told News 12 this institution provides critical support to the people of south Brooklyn and she's hoping to find a solution.
"We need a miracle, we need somebody out there that maybe could make a difference but we're doing the best we can, we don't know what else to do," said Neve.
Neve and his team said serving the community is the mission and they won't give up without a fight.
