Best of Brooklyn: Blind Flatbush woman training for 2nd NYC Marathon
A woman from Flatbush isn't letting adversity stop her from going the distance.
Abigail Lanier has been gradually losing her sight since she was 4 years old.
With the help of a guide at her side, Lanier has run in the Boston Marathon, the New York City Marathon and is currently training for her second New York City Marathon in November.
Lanier is also taking steps to help others who are blind and visually impaired.
She is part of the nonprofit group Learning Ally's "Steps For Success" program. The program helps raise money for blind and visually impaired students in order to get the technology they need for school.
Lanier is also a mentor in the group's College Success Program, which pairs blind mentors with blind students in college.
"We act as a resource to help those students succeed and motivate them to be more independent and successful," she says.
