Authorities have identified a body found off Coney Island in Brooklyn Wednesday as that of a missing 10-year-old swimmer.
A spokeswoman for the New York City medical examiner, Ellen Borakove, says an autopsy is being done to confirm the cause of Akira Johnson's death.
Crews had been searching for Johnson since she was swept out to sea Saturday while swimming with her cousin. The search came to an end at about 2:45 a.m.
Residents of the housing complex in where Johnson lived say they are sad but also relieved that her body has been recovered. They say they have been waiting for the family to have a sense of closure.
Johnson's family is holding a candlelight vigil Wednesday night.
