Borough officials broke ground on the second phases of a multimillion-dollar playground renovation in Bushwick today.
The Parks Department broke ground at the Heckscher Park on Linden Street. Department officials say the whole renovation project will cost $3.65 million, and people in the community say it's worth every penny.
The Heckscher playground, which sits in the middle of several apartment buildings on Linden Street, recently got brand new play equipment installed as part of the first phase in the renovation.
Today, park and elected officials broke ground on the second phase, which will include fitness equipment, a soccer field, and basketball court, handball court, spectator bleachers and security lighting.
People who live nearby say they can't wait for the work to be complete so their children will have a safe place to play.
Park officials expect to have the renovation completed by next fall.
