A plan that was struck down twice is now back, looking to reconnect parks and sections of Williamsburg to expand the green space in Brooklyn.

“BQGreen,” aims to make three parks in the area into one big park as part of a fight against pollution and racial disparities.

Councilmember Nydia Velazquez was joined by fellow elected officials and advocates who are fighting for this plan that they say will reconnect the community. They say that they need Gov. Kathy Hochul’s approval, since the land that the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway sits on - and would need to be redesigned - belongs to the state.

The leaders and advocates say that the cost of this project would be anywhere from $100 million to $200 million, according to figures gathered from around 10 years ago.

Velazquez says that a letter was sent to the governor three weeks ago, and that she has heard there is positive movement for this plan to hopefully be put in place. Even if the state does jump on board with the plan, there’s no timeline on how long it could take for the project to be completed.
