Finding a parking spot in the city is never easy, but the FDNY is reminding drivers that parking near a fire hydrant is not only illegal—it’s dangerous.
Over the weekend, a car was spotted parked in front of a hydrant on Brighton 14th Street in broad daylight.
A closer look revealed an official-looking fire officer pass displayed inside the vehicle, complete with a name and identification number.
However, the FDNY confirmed to News 12 that the pass was fake.
The City's Department of Transportation says parking within 15 feet of a fire hydrant is prohibited at all times. Still, many drivers were seen ignoring the rule.
Some residents say the scam is frustrating and poses a serious safety risk.
“They have to feel more responsibility for their actions,” said Brighton Beach resident Vladimir Troitsky. “Rules are rules. We can’t break them. Otherwise, it’s going to be a mess.”
The FDNY says it is investigating the incident and urges anyone who spots illegal hydrant parking to report it to 311 or local police.
