The Brooklyn Museum?s graffiti art exhibit opened this weekend to praise and criticism over what some see as condoning vandalism.
More than 1,000 visitors have toured the exhibit, which consists of aerosol works on canvas. Organizers say graffiti is a part of history that dates back to ancient Egypt. The exhibit also boasts an interactive experience, where visitors can do some tagging of their own. Artists defend their work, saying graffiti is now an international movement.
Some Brooklyn residents argue the exhibit sends the message that vandalism is okay. Homeowners say tagging is a major problem in the borough, which brings down property values and the quality of life. The exhibit runs through September 3.
