A first-time voter and youth organizer in Brooklyn was featured in President Joe Biden’s victory video. Now, although she has hope for the new administration, she says the mission continues.
“It's very important to educate people that live in areas like mine,” says Colby Dunbar.
Dunbar is using her voice, alongside her friends, in the Crew Counts NYC organization.
“I feel like I’m at the age where I should have the choice to change what I don't like,” said Dunbar.
The organization held block parties and helped to register more than 150 of their neighbors to vote before the 2020 election.
Dunbar says they hosted the events, particularly on blocks with high crime and that are highly policed.
The events caught the attention of a Brooklyn resident and filmmaker, who then asked to shoot a video for President Joe Biden before election day.
“It was exciting for me to watch through the video because I feel like the video showed the change, we're all hoping for,” said Dunbar.
While Dunbar says she does have hope for change at the federal level, it needs to be seen in her community.
“I live in the projects, so growing up I saw a lot of crime and I have younger siblings, so I feel like the younger generations shouldn’t have to go through what we went through, so we've got to start that change now,” said Dunbar.
She says that comes with educating her neighbors on the mayoral race.
“I hope policing changes, and to create equal opportunities for all, across the board no matter what race or gender...everyone should have a fair chance,” said Dunbar.
Dunbar and the rest of the crew are planning their next events during Civic Week in March.
