New Zealand police have filed charges against a Boston University student, who was behind the wheel in last week's deadly crash that killed three of his fellow students and injured four others.
Twenty-year-old Stephen Houseman, of Long Island, appeared in court this afternoon in Auckland. Among the charges he faces are three counts of careless driving causing death, each of which carries a maximum three-month jail sentence. Police say drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the accident.
The students, in New Zealand on the school's study abroad program, were traveling to a hiking trip when their minivan rolled off the road. Three students were killed, including 20-year-old Daniela Lekhno, who was raised in Brooklyn, according to the New York Daily News. Four other students were hurt and one remains hospitalized in critical condition.
