Some Bronx residents and veterans are calling for the city to clean up a World War II memorial site in Van Cortlandt Park they say has been neglected over the years.

Concerned residents say plaques are hidden by dirt or walked on by pedestrians.

?In many cases plaques are missing. We started off with 39 trees and 39 plaques, and now we have approximately 16 plaques still existing,? Herb Barret said.

Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz (D-Bronx) said the veteran site deserves an upgrade and that the city has a moral obligation to help. He said he is trying to set up a walk-through with the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation so it can see the state of the site for itself.

The department said it is working to determine the best way to restore and display the bronze tablets.
