Members of the community have formed an anti-violence outreach program in Canarsie in the wake of increasing crime in the neighborhood.

Residents have joined together with council members, law enforcement and members of the clergy to run the program. The members meet with people on the street and hand out fliers that offer help and guidance for those coping with violence.

The NYPD says there have been at least 28 shootings in the area so far this year, compared to only 11 at this time last year.

The outreach group says they want to ensure the streets are safe so children will not have to walk scared around their neighborhood. They plan on visiting a different location in Canarsie at least once a month.
