The NYPD is searching for a suspect who they say tried to steal a running car -- then crashed and ran away before trying once more to enter the vehicle.
Police say the wild incident that was caught on video happened on July 29 around 6:30 p.m. in front of Nostrand Avenue.
They say a 56-year-old man had parked his car with the engine running as he waited to withdraw money from a walk-up ATM.
They say the suspect entered the victim’s vehicle and tried to drive away. Police say that's when the 56-year-old man reached into his car through the open window and tried to wrestle control of the car from the individual.
As they struggled, the car collided head-on into a stationary MTA bus. The suspect then put the car in reverse and collided with a parked car and unoccupied vehicle before he got out and ran away from the scene, according to police.
The 56-year-old man tried to chase the suspect but lost sight. But later, the suspect returned to the scene and tried to re-enter the victim’s car once again.
The suspect ran off when the 56-year-old man tried to approach him again. He fled southbound on Nostrand Avenue.
The 56-year-old man suffered minor injuries and was transported to Mt. Sinai Brooklyn Hospital in stable condition, according to police.
No other injuries were reported.
Police say the suspect is described as a Black man between the ages of 16 and 20 with braided hair. He was last seen wearing a blue shirt, black jeans and black and white sneakers.
