Local business owners, civic groups and the city will install new security cameras in Ditmas Park in an effort to stop pickpockets and other thieves in the area.

Business owners say iPhones and handbags are among the personal items stolen frequently in the area.

The cameras, they say, will help police make arrests.

The NYPD's 70th Precinct says that violent crime is down in the area, but property crimes have increased. Other stolen items include bicycles and credit card information.

Almac Hardware, one the businesses involved in the program, will receive funds from the borough president to install a camera system outside. That camera will be available to police if crimes happen in the area.

"All you need is two cameras on different corridors to catch a person committing a crime, entering or leaving that location," says Eric Adams, the Brooklyn borough president. "There's more than enough to assist the police department and their apprehension of the person involved."

A McDonald's on Flatbush Avenue was the backdrop of a massive fight two years ago. The restaurant's general manager says the cameras would benefit businesses and shoppers alike.

The program is part of the NYPD's Operation Safe Shopper, which Adams says will expand into Brooklyn Heights by the end of the month.
