Community leaders, housing advocates and developers announced a series of workshops Tuesday to give Brooklyn residents a fighting chance to qualify for new affordable housing.

Affordable housing units have been set aside in many new high rise apartment buildings around Downtown Brooklyn, and officials want to make sure residents are prepared to apply for them.

The city uses a lottery system for new affordable apartments once they become available. However, housing advocates say lotteries don't often yield qualified applications.

Many people apply through lotteries, but are disqualified because of credit issues, incomplete applications or minor mistakes. The workshops help residents create the perfect application.

The first workshop takes place Thursday at the Brown Memorial Baptist Church at 484 Washington Ave. It begins at 6:30 p.m.

There will be four other workshops in the borough between now and next year.
