A local lawmaker wants to prevent injuries and deaths caused by falling tree limbs in the wake of a recent tragedy in Red Hook.
In November, Jing Liu was delivering food by bicycle when police say a tree came crashing down on him. Crews contracted by the New York City Parks Department were cutting down a tree that was damaged by Superstorm Sandy.
City Councilman Mark Treyger is drafting tree safety legislation, including training and certification for tree pruning and removing trees.
A large tree limb fell on Martin Novitsky's head in Coney Island a few months after Superstorm Sandy. He says that he supports the safety legislation.
"By proposing this legislation, it is not only protecting people today, but he's protecting people for many years to come in the future," Novitsky says.
Treyger says he also wants safety perimeters set up around trees that are being removed and testing on trees that are in danger of falling.
