A new affordable housing complex opened Wednesday in Cypress Hills, giving some Brooklyn residents the chance to finally have a place to call home.
Cypress Plaza Mews, which was built by the Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, consists of 18 two-bedroom apartments and six commercial storefronts. Residents selected to live in the building had to be income-qualified and pass credit checks.
The building is part of a larger project started in 2007 to renovate the entire neighborhood. Cypress Plaza Mews, which cost nearly $7 million to build, is the first completed portion of the economic revitalization project that is expected to bring more than 300 affordable housing apartments and condominiums to the community.
The apartment rates are based on a sliding scale dependent on family income. They range from $685 a month to $1,100 a month.
