The Brooklyn district attorney is expected to indict the stepfather of a 2-year-old girl on life support for alleged abuse.
According to police, Thaiya Spruill-Smith suffered a massive head injury late last week after being assaulted by her 25-year-old stepfather, David Adams. He is facing charges of assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child.
The DA's office says it has until Wednesday to present its case to a grand jury.
Her biological parents had been fighting for custody, and now it's unclear who has the authority to take her off life support and make the funeral arrangements. She had been living in Brownsville with her stepfather and biological mother.
Officials say that once she is taken off life support, an autopsy will be conducted and more charges against Adams could follow.
The Administration for Children's Services is also conducting an investigation.
