The Kings County District Attorney's Office unsealed an indictment against a man Wednesday in the cold-case killing of a 16-year-old girl 10 years ago.
Chanel Petro-Nixon, a high school honor roll student, was found strangled in a garbage bag four days after disappearing on Father's Day in 2006. She had told family members she was going to fill out a job application for an Applebee's restaurant on Fulton Street. She also told her family that she would see her friend -- who prosecutors say is the man now indicted for her slaying.
Officials say a grand jury indicted 29-year-old Veron Primus after NYPD detectives, who learned he was in custody overseas, went to speak with him. News 12 sources say a witness came to New York to testify before the grand jury earlier this month.
Primus was deported to the Caribbean island of St. Vincent last year after serving a prison sentence in New York for violating an order of protection. An ex-girlfriend had accused him of trying to take her hostage.
He is now imprisoned on St. Vincent -- accused of fatally stabbing another woman in November 2015 -- but District Attorney Ken Thompson is filing a request for extradition.
If convicted of murder in New York, Primus will face 25 years to life behind bars.
