The city of New York says it is developing better ways for bicyclists to stay safe due to a rise in bicyclist deaths.
City officials say one in four adults use a bike to get around.
Despite the launch of Vision Zero to limit traffic deaths in 2014, the number of cycling deaths has gone up.
“This year has been so shocking,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said earlier Thursday. “Seventeen cyclists have died already. We lost 10 cyclists all last year.”
The city's "Green Wave: A Plan for Cycling across New York City" aims to keep bicyclists safe with a key change of adding more protected bike lanes.
The $58.4 million plan will also improve and update design of roadways, expand NYPD enforcement and implement more helmet safety.
