The New York City Department of Correction is making sure that hard work doesn’t go unnoticed, surprising students with free sneakers for their good efforts in school.
Students at P.S. 380 cheered as they were celebrated for their achievements. All students who had an attendance rate of 95% or higher and were deemed good role models got free kicks.
The shoes from the DOC’s Disaster Relief Association, not only tributing the students’ good work but also honoring the good work of Jerry Cariello, a 9/11 first responder and emergency service unit captain who passed away last November due to 9/11-related cancer.
“It really instills them not only being school leaders but community and global leaders,” said teacher Johann Cariello, wife of the late Jerry Cariello. “Having them here and supporting me as a family meant the world to me and I know that my husband is looking down with a smile on his face.”
