(03/12/07) CANARSIE ? The Department of Education (DOE) has decided to close the last night school that allows Brooklyn residents to earn a high school diploma.
DOE representatives say they are shutting down the Brooklyn Comprehensive Night High School due to low enrollment. The school was moved from Midwood to South Shore High School, and many supporters blame the move on plummeting enrollment. They say South Shore High School is not an ideal location for the program. According to the DOE, enrollment has dropped from 66 percent to 44 percent.
The United Teachers Federation is lobbying to keep enrolled students in the program for at least another year. Brooklyn Bridge Academy, another transfer school, will be replacing the Brooklyn Comprehensive Night High School on the South Shore High School campus.
