The conflict in the Middle East is creating uncertainty for many people in the Hudson Valley and across the globe. As tensions between Israel and Iran escalate, the price of oil is surging.
Currently, the average price for a gallon of gas in Westchester County stands at $3.32. Comparing that to surrounding counties, Rockland County is slightly lower at $3.29, and Putnam County is 10 cents lower than that, standing at $3.19.
Those prices all compared to the current statewide average of $3.17, which is five cents more than it was one month ago. As of Thursday morning, AAA reports the national average for a regular gallon of gas is $3.20. That is up eight cents from last week.
Patrick De Haan, the Head of Petroleum Analysis at GasBuddy, said the national average for a gallon of regular gas could go up between 10 and 25 cents over the next few weeks.
Another concern drivers have is the price of diesel, which De Haan said could increase by as much as 40 cents over the next two weeks. If those diesel prices rise, experts say consumers could see prices across the board go up because it costs companies more to transport goods like groceries.
“If this situation continues to spiral out of control, you could see businesses that rely on things like crude oil, diesel, jet fuel and gasoline start to incur a much more increased cost and that could eventually filter down to motorists,” De Haan said.
However, GasBuddy does not think gas prices will rise as much as they did last summer.
