An East Flatbush teacher was presented with the 2018 Big Apple Award for her outstanding work.
Michelle Jennings teaches science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at the Brooklyn Science and Engineering Academy. Jennings is one of only 17 teachers citywide to receive the honor from among more than 6,000 applicants.
"At the door I see my kids looking and I was like, 'Oh my God, this is really happening,'" says Jennings. "I just cried."
The school's principal says Jennings is the epitome of a Big Apple recipient, adding that she is fantastic and passionate.
The teachers are judged on how they impact student learning, their teaching skills and how they contribute to the school community.
Jennings' students says she helps motivate them and feel excited about learning.
