A new study by the Environmental Protection Agency has the Gowanus Canal on the road to a serious cleanup.
The industrial area is rich with history, but more famous for toxins, environmentalists say. Two years ago, the EPA added the waterway to the Superfund list of the country's most hazardous sites. Now, the EPA's feasibility study found several options for cleaning up the chemical contamination in the canal. The EPA will now evaluate technologies it could use for the cleanup and develop a plan.
Environmentalists are optimistic that with this new study, the canal could be completely clean by 2018.
