The FDNY came to Long Island Thursday for hurricane preparedness training ahead of hurricane season, which begins on June 1.

The day saw crews preparing for every scenario in case a major natural disaster hits the area this hurricane season.

Starting in the morning, the FDNY led a host of full-scale simulations that were all based on a Category 4 hurricane hitting Fire Island.

The operations included search and rescue missions, small boat discharges and even some canines.

All of the simulations took place on the west end of the island as they did their best to ensure they would be prepared, no matter how severe the storm, to help those in need.

"We have seen over the last 10 years, the last 20 years, the number of hurricanes that come in and the weather-related events, and it’s such a large-scale and covers such a broad area that the local resources can’t, the local jurisdictions do not have the resources to handle all of that," said FDNY Chief of Special Operations John Esposito.

The hurricane preparedness simulations will continue Friday when the FDNY welcomes Suffolk County Urban Search and Rescue to finish off the operation over the next few days.

The training exercises are expected to conclude on Sunday.
