June is Gun Violence Awareness Month, and a filmmaker from Coney Island is hoping to raise awareness about the issue.
Jeffrey Morton's latest documentary, "Our Mother's Voices," details the pain that local mothers like Yvette Ramos have faced because of gun violence. Ramos lost her son, Kenneth Casilla, three years ago.
Casilla was a 20-year-old aspiring rapper who was shot in the head while on a trip with friends in Miami. Ramos lives with the pain every day, but is fighting to put an end to gun violence.
"Our Mother's Voices" will be recognized at the People's Film Festival, and Morton hopes that others realize the severity of the issue in Brooklyn.
"Right now, it's at an all-time high. A lot of these young people don't have respect for themselves or no one," says Morton.
