Some Brooklyn parents worry that new fire safety regulations could spell the end of affordable day care.
The state requires day care centers have two working emergency exits. Officials also consider the floor the facility is on because it can impact accessibility during a fire. Shelia Samuels, who has been watching children for 26 years in her sixth-floor apartment, fears the rules could run her out of business. Parents are concerned they would have to stretch their budgets to pay for more expensive child care.
Fire officials say the guidelines ensure safety and they work with home-based child care providers to meet codes. They reassure residents that out of almost 700 inspections, they?ve only shut down 17 centers.
