Firefighter honored for saving toddler in Brooklyn fire
Stefon Douglas was not in uniform at the time, but he represented New York's Bravest when he sprung to the rescue of a 3-year-old girl in a house fire two weeks ago.
Douglas was honored today with the Municipal Credit Union Hero Award for his action.
“On the way home. I make this one turn and it just so happens on this day, I look to the right and I saw heavy smoke pumping from the back of the house,” said Douglas.
Douglas grabbed a breathing apparatus from his car and says he heard a little girl crying after he helped someone who was trying to put the fire out with a garden hose .
He was able to enter the fire and save her, but the child’s mother died from her injuries.
Douglas says he didn’t know the family that lived in the home but that he had seen them on the block before. He says he’s now looking to one day meeting the young girl whose life he was able to save.
