Funeral arrangements have been announced for the FDNY lieutenant killed in the line of duty Saturday night.
Gordon Ambelas, who was known to many as Matt, died after becoming trapped while looking for possible victims during a high-rise apartment fire in Williamsburg.
His wake will be held Tuesday and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m., and from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Casey McCallum Rice Funeral Home on Staten Island. The funeral is set for 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Clare's Church, which is also on Staten Island.
Ambelas was a 14-year FDNY veteran who was promoted to lieutenant about 10 months ago. He had helped with recovery efforts after Sept. 11 and was recently recognized for helping to save a 7-year-old boy trapped in a gate back in May.
The fallen Ladder 119 firefighter leaves behind a wife and two children. Fire officials say he's the first FDNY member killed on the job in two years.
Investigators say the cause of the fire was a pinched electrical cord on the 19th floor of the building.
