Community members gathered at an intersection in Kensington to remember a woman who was killed there while crossing the street last month.
The group gathered at Coney Island and Church avenues to remember Maria del Carmen Porras-Hernandez.
Her daughter says her mother came to the area on Mondays for a group meeting and was likely taking the shortcut home when she was hit and killed by a driver on July 8.
The victim was walking in the crosswalk when police say 63-year-old Claudette Crosby hit her while turning right onto Coney Island Avenue from Church Avenue. Crosby was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian and failure to exercise due care.

Since then the family has tried to cope with the loss. They held a vigil and rally at the corner where she lost her life. They got Council member Brad Lander involved - even though it's not his district - because they know he's involved in making roads safer. The family say it was important for them to step up and try to make changes so that another person doesn't die there.

The family has also been getting signatures from community members to get more safety measures, such as speed bumps.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Transportation for a comment on this incident. It said it is continuing to look at potential safety enhancements for the intersection.
