A Hasidic female rock band is gaining popularity in Brooklyn.
Bulletproof Stockings, jokingly named for the opaque tights worn by Hasidic women, was started three years ago in Williamsburg by Dalia Shusterman and Perl Wolfe. The two women say they were brought together by music after Shusterman's husband passed away and Wolfe had gone through a divorce.
In accordance with Hasidic law, Bulletproof Stockings performs for women-only audiences. "We want to create a space where women can rock out with other women and have that experience," says Wolfe.
The band's music is based on Hasidic teachings and before rehearsals, they learn Torah together.
