A gas main break prompted the evacuation of hundreds of people at the Jacobi Medical Center complex Wednesday.
Con Edison says a contractor struck a natural gas line with a backhoe around 7:30 a.m. The utility company, firefighters and EMS workers responded to the scene at Eastchester Road and Pelham Parkway.
The hospital itself was not affected, but resident buildings and a clinical building were. No one was injured, however, about 300 employees and medical students were evacuated while the area was sealed off. The hospital says it switched to oil after the leak and the buildings were reopened around 9 a.m. Con Ed representatives say they are unsure how long it will take to repair the gas main.
