Store owners say they are trying to rebuild from scratch following a massive fire that tore through several Bronx shops on Westchester Avenue.
The three-alarm fire on the morning of Jan. 28 inside 1783 Westchester Ave. quickly spread to six adjacent businesses and a second-floor church in the commercial building.
Families tell News 12 that they are still wrangling with their insurance companies more than a week after the fire. Others say they are trying to negotiate with the building landlord over a remaining balance of $6,000 that is past due.
“I can't look at the building without thinking of all the memories there,” said Azteca Bakery Owner Jose Escobar.
Three of the affected businesses say they have found strength in one another to help start over and rebuild. They say they hope to come back stronger than before.
