A Kensington woman claims an Islamic phrase triggered a response from mobile payment app Venmo, stopping the transaction.
Shahana Hanif was enjoying lunch with friends Saturday at Al-Aqsa Restaurant located on Starling Avenue in the Bronx.
She was using Venmo to pay her friend for the food and immediately received a notification that said her transaction was being reviewed by its compliance team.
Hanif believes her description of the payment triggered a response from Venmo because it used the name of the Al-Aqsa Restaurant.
The Brooklyn native was never told why the message was flagged.
The transaction eventually went through.
Hanif says she is unsure if she will continue using the money transfer service and says the experience has hurt her deeply.
News 12 reached out to Venmo but has not heard back.
