Gov. Kathy Hochul has ordered more resources be deployed at state parks to keep a lookout for sharks.

The governor is adding more drones and patrol boats to state beaches She is also increasing helicopter flights by state police and allowing beaches to increase overtime for lifeguards by 25%.

"They're gonna be scanning the waters, they'll be in the surf boats in front of the swimmers to make sure if we see any dangerous situations, any sharks, anything that would cause a problem, we'll get swimmers out of the water," says George Gorman, of NYS Parks.

Even with the extra patrols, state officials are advising people to avoid areas with bait fish that attract sharks and not to swim near fisherman.

Swimmers are also advised not to swim at dawn, dusk or at night - and to swim close to shore where lifeguards can see you.

Jones Beach officials say despite the increase in shark sightings, they haven't noticed a major decease in swimming.

Samantha Costanzo, 11, of Lynbrook, says she isn't afraid of sharks because she doesn't go too far into the ocean.

Visitors from further away like Hanna Havardstein, of Norway, are a little concerned about the sharks near Long Island.

"We are a bit scared - we think about it, so we are a bit worried - but since there are so many other people bathing, we believe it's OK," Havardstein says.
