Robert Ellis, the man accused of killing a police officer, was sentenced to 15 years behind bars Wednesday after being found guilty on weapons charges in connection with the murder.
Prosecutors had asked that Ellis be sentenced to three consecutive terms for the three counts of criminal weapons possession, which would amount to 45 years. The judge deemed that sentence too harsh.
In December, Ellis was acquitted of murder and attempted murder in connection with the death of Detective Russel Timoshenko.
Prosecutors had alleged that Ellis was the one who fatally shot Timoshenko and injured his partner, Detective Herman Yan, during a routine traffic stop in Prospect Lefferts Gardens in 2007.
Ellis was charged with acting in consort to murder Timoshenko and injure Yan. The jury acquitted him of both charges, but found him guilty of three counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
Ellis?s former roommate, Dexter Bostic, was convicted in the murder, and he is expected to be sentenced next month. Ellis? third alleged accomplice, Lee Woods, awaits another trial after the mistrial.
Woods? second trial is expected to get under way Feb. 23.
