Voters in Brooklyn's 40th City Council district elected Dr. Mathieu Eugene Tuesday in a re-vote after residency questions arose about the winner.Mathieu Eugene, who won the February 20 election and requested the re-vote, cast his ballot at P.S. 139. When Eugene is sworn in, he will become the first Haitian to serve on the City Council. His competition included Harry Schiffman and Wellington Sharpe. A judge recently ruled Sharpe could run, despite not having the minimum numbers of signatures, saying he would have likely gotten the signatures if time permitted.City Council Speaker Christine Quinn refused to swear in Eugene after his initial win. Quinn says Eugene failed to show proof that he lived in the district he was elected to represent, which includes Flatbush and Crown Heights.
The re-vote is costing taxpayers more than $350,000. Yvette Clarke left the 40th District seat vacant after her election to Congress.
