While the school year is winding down, parents are being urged to make a decision on their children's plans for the fall.

Mayor Bill de Blasio kicked off a pre-kindergarten "Day of Action" to get the word out about universal pre-K options. The initiative is aimed at getting as many young scholars as possible signed up before June 26, the last day of school.

Fliers are making their way around the five boroughs with everything parents need to know about pre-K. Volunteers are canvassing neighborhoods to spread the word about all the available education options, and will also be reaching out to people by phone.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Farina says the pre-K initiative is going to frame the future of education in New York City. She reminded parents that it's not a baby-sitting service, but a crucial step in preparing kids for kindergarten and the years that follow.

Mayor de Blasio says that those children being given a better start will have a better life ahead of them and that the whole school system will start to improve as a result.

All children who turn 4 years old in 2014 are eligible for free pre-K at public schools and community-based early childhood center.

Mayor de Blasio is also urging parents to apply to as many schools as possible, so that they can get in before enrollment is filled up.

He plans to continue the public awareness campaign for the rest of the school year.
