Mayor Eric Adams called his mental health task force plan a success as it reaches its one-year anniversary.
According to the city, over 50 homeless New Yorkers now have a roof over their heads and a chance at rebuilding their lives, thanks to the program. The initiative narrowed down 100 homeless people who were considered to have severe mental illnesses.
Adams says of those 100 homeless people, 54 of them got the assistance they needed from hospitals or other supportive outlets.
"People who might've been written off or forgotten or would have been would be participating in some form of dangerous encounter… many are now reconnected with their families who never stopped loving or worrying about them,” said Mayor Eric Adams.
Adams says there is still much work to be done to bring aid to more of New York City’s homeless population.
