Motorcyclists from Long Island and beyond were at Coram Fire Department to honor Staff Sgt. Louis Bonacasa with a memorial ride.
Air National Guard Staff Sgt. Bonacasa was killed on Dec. 21, 2015, in Afghanistan when his patrol was attacked by a suicide bomber on a motorcycle.
Bonacasa's wife Deborah Bonacasa and daughter Lily Bonacasa honor his memory with acts of good will. Lily was five when her father made the ultimate sacrifice in Afghanistan.
Sunday's memorial ride benefited two causes. The first was Lily’s Toy House, which provides Christmas toys for children who would otherwise not have presents under the tree.
The second was the Staff Sgt. Louis Bonacasa Memorial Fund, which supports veterans and active-duty service members.
Deborah Bonacasa says helping others keeps her husband's memory alive and helps her and her daughter heal.
“It took me awhile to realize that grief does have a positive impact because you strive to preserve your loved one’s legacy to honor them in a special way. And we try to do that by creating a nonprofit to help others. That's how we honor him and that's how we get through,” says Deborah Bonacasa.
Lily Bonacasa praises those who showed up to support the event. She collects toy donations throughout the year in preparation of her Christmas giveaway.
“I'm so grateful for everyone that's coming out here just to help and bring honor to my dad,” she says. “I want to keep his name alive because I want other people to remember his sacrifice and just how much love he had for everyone.”
