The MTA says removing trash cans from some subway stations is making them cleaner.
The transit agency started this pilot program in September 2012, and removed garbage cans from 10 stations. Officials say this resulted in a 66 percent drop in collected litter.
In July 2014, 29 stations on the J, M, Z lines had their trash cans removed, leading to a 36 percent drop in trash collected, according to officials.
The MTA says it is going to keep the pilot program going for another year and continue to study the results.
